Trent Alexander-Arnold’s England career looked set to see the Liverpool defender end up in midfield, yet things could be about to change.

After a poor Euros campaign in the position, Lee Carsley this international break has brought Alexander-Arnold back to his favoured right-back position for England, with the fullback enjoying a fantastic game against the Republic of Ireland.

Winning praise from Gary Lineker and the English media, Alexander-Arnold’s performance in Dublin has already go some fans thinking that right-back should be where the 25-year-old Liverpool star ends up spending his England career.

Yet Rio Ferdinand now has a plan for how Alexander-Arnold could play midfield for England.

Ferdinand suggests England fielding players to help Alexander-Arnold

Speaking on Rio Presents, the pundit made the claim that England need to surround Alexander-Arnold with players in the XI that can help the defender with the physical aspect of the game, with Ferdinand also suggesting that more coaching can be done to help the Liverpool man with the position.

Ferdinand said about Alexander-Arnold playing in midfield for England: “I think there are two things that have to be really closely looked at addressed with Trent if you are going to start him in midfield. One of them is you need runners.

“It’s pointless having him move into midfield if there are no runners or good movement penetrating the opposition’s backline because he is the one can play those balls.

“The other thing is to coach him or sort the system out that he does not receive the ball with his back to play. That’s the biggest problem in his game in that position.”

Alexander-Arnold’s England future might belong at right-back

Alexander-Arnold in midfield makes a lot of sense for a number of England fans, with the defender’s best performances for the Three Lions coming from this position where the Liverpool maestro can control the game at his tempo.

Yet after this weekend’s win against Ireland, there’s a real chance that Alexander-Arnold’s future could belong in the right-back role, with the defender the natural replacement for Kyle Walker in the position for England.

Whilst Alexander-Arnold at midfield could still be an option for Carsley, the defender seemed to enjoy every minute at right-back against Ireland, and England could have their successor for Walker in place in the Liverpool man.
