Colombian press rave about Luis Diaz

Diaz has started the season very well indeed for Liverpool. Despite suggestions that Diaz was set to be sold in the summer, the Colombian has come out swinging.

Three goals in the first three games of the Premier League campaign have led to suggestions that Diaz will be handed a new contract at Liverpool.

Whether or not that ultimately comes to fruition remains to be seen. But there’s no denying that the No.7 is one of the most in-form members of the Liverpool squad.

That continued on Saturday, with Diaz grabbing an 82nd minute equaliser for Colombia against Peu.

It was big goal for Los Cafeteros, keeping them unbeaten during the World Cup qualifying campaign after seven games. And according to Colombian outlet El Heraldo, the point was largely thanks to Diaz.

They claim that Lucho ‘always tried to look for the opponent’s goal’ and ‘took charge’ of clawing his team back into the match. His rating of seven out of 10 was the highest given to any Colombia player.

El Tiempo give Diaz an identical rating, which was also the joint best along with James Rodriguez.

They claim that that Liverpool man ‘didn’t shine but was destined to be the hero’ and ultimately scored the equaliser which was ‘worth gold’ for Colombia.

What was Luis Diaz’s goal like?

Diaz’s three goals for Liverpool so far in 2024/25 have all been different.

His first was a left-footed finish lashed into the net on a counter-attack, the second a back-post header and the third a lovely, controlled sweep with his right boot.

Over his time at Liverpool, though, Diaz has made a bit of a habit of scoring with his head. The former Porto man’s finish against Man United on Sunday was his 27th goal for the club. Six have been headers.

And once again, Lucho showed this attribute for Colombia on Saturday. Sneaking in at the back post, Diaz pounced to head home Jhon Duran’s near-post flick on from a corner.

It was an instinctive finish from Diaz and was another indication that Liverpool can expect better output from him this season. Long may it continue.
