What’s really going on with Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister’s injury for Argentina

A real feature of the early part of Liverpool’s season so far has been their ability to avoid injury.

The Reds have had a notoriously chequered fitness history in recent years, with too many players missing too many matches.

However, things have started to look up in that respect. With the highly regarded Ruben Peeters now added to the Liverpool coaching staff, Curtis Jones is the only one to have missed game time up to this point.

Even then, it has been reported that Jones is likely to be fit to face Nottingham Forest next week, leaving Arne Slot with a fully fit complement.

Unfortunately, though, the international break throws a wildcard into proceedings. No matter how well the Liverpool squad are looked after in-house, there’s always the chance of injury when jetting all over the world. Alexis Mac Allister, look away now.

Alexis Mac Allister picks up adductor problem

Playing his football back home in South America, Mac Allister is one of the most travelled Liverpool players when the international break rolls around.

The 25-year-old has become a key player for Argentina and regularly finds himself in the starting XI.

That was the case again this week despite rumblings that the Liverpool man was injured. Mac Allister missed training in the lead up to Argentina’s game against Chile, but still started – and scored – during the game on Friday.

In the end, Mac Allister played 78 minutes of the World champion’s 3-0 win, giving the appearance that he may have shaken off whatever was troubling him in the build up to the match.

However, according to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, that does not appear to be the case.

Taking to X on Friday afternoon, Edul reported that Mac Allister is struggling with an adductor ‘problem’ and will train alone until Tuesday’s game against Colombia.

“Alexis Mac Allister has an adductor problem,” says the reporter. “He will train separately until Tuesday to be able to make it to the match against Colombia.”

Alexis Mac Allister should head back to Liverpool

Liverpool have every right to be angry with the treatment of Mac Allister while with his national team.

If there was worry of injury – and there clearly was a suspicion that the No.10 was not fully fit – then there’s no way he should have played for so long on Friday.

Clearly, having called him up, Argentina can use Mac Allister as they see fit, and the player will no doubt have had a say in that, too. But at the end of the day, his fitness should come first.

After playing almost the full game against Chile, Mac Allister’s issue has obviously gotten worse. In our opinion, that should now see him head back to Liverpool were he can be assessed by the Reds’ fitness staff.

Training alone away from his teammates for the chance to make a cameo against Colombia should not really be in the question. You can’t imagine Liverpool will be too happy with this.
