Liverpool players are currently away all over the globe as they link up with their national teams.

For some, this is business as usual. The Reds have a number of players within their ranks who are big players for their national teams.

For others, however, there is a sense of a point needing to be proved. Trent Alexander-Arnold, for example, has the chance to show new England boss Lee Carsley that he deserves a spot in the Three Lions starting XI.

Another player aiming to make a splash is midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. After a slightly subdued first season at Anfield last year, Gravenberch has been terrific so far this campaign.

Having failed to play a single minute for the Netherlands during the summer’s European Championship, Gravenberch has come to the Dutch camp in excellent form. And he’s been opening up on why that might be.

Ryan Gravenberch opens up on Liverpool form

Throughout the summer, Arne Slot was looking for the right player to add to his Liverpool midfield.

Having decided that that somebody was the stubborn Martin Zubimendi and nobody else, Slot was forced to use what he had at his disposal in the Liverpool squad.

So far, that has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Gravenberch has been excellent in Liverpool’s midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Now away with his national team and hoping to replicate that form, the 22-year-old was asked by ESPN NL to name exactly what has changed this season.

“I’m just feeling good, if I’m honest,” answered the former Ajax man. “Things are going well at the club and I just do my thing.

Pushed to make a comment on Slot himself, Gravenberch admitted that the Liverpool head coach has given him the confidence to play.

“He just gives me the confidence now, puts me in the starting line-up and it’s going well,” says Gravenberch.

“When playing again of course [it gives confidence], making minutes and for me in principle the trust is also added. I feel good about myself and it’s getting better over time.

“He’s a good trainer, he knows what he wants, he has a clear plan and so far we are executing it very well.”

Will Liverpool replace Ryan Gravenberch?

Gravenberch’s emergence as a genuine starter for Liverpool has been the biggest story of the Reds season so far.

With Slot actively trying to add Zubimendi over the summer, the No.38 had looked likely to spend another season as a rotational option.

But in the Spaniard’s absence, Gravenberch has grasped his chance. Playing regularly, there’s a feeling that the Netherlands international could only get better, too.

Nevertheless, it has been suggested that Liverpool could come back in for Zubimendi in January. If they do or not may be dependent on Gravenberch’s form until then.

If he can continue to do well in Liverpool’s midfield, then maybe there will no longer be a need to bring anyone in at all. With Gravenberch feeling good and seemingly settled, there seems a real chance that he can cement his place.
