Ian Wright thinks there’s a Liverpool player who has been seriously impressing coaches in training

Liverpool’s players depart for the first international break of the season in fantastic fettle.

The Reds have been perfect in the Premier League so far. Three wins from three and not a goal conceded in sight.

During the three games so far, it’s safe to say that the real star of the show has been Arne Slot. The new Liverpool head coach has hit the ground running in impressive fashion.

But while Slot and his coaching staff have been terrific from day one, the Dutchman also owes a lot to the quality within his Liverpool squad.

Slot took over a group which won a trophy and pushed hard for the Premier League title last season. And although the team was not added to overly during the transfer market, it’s clear that they have improved their standard regardless.

Ian Wright shares Ryan Gravenberch surprise

Although there was understandable frustration over Liverpool’s lack of business this summer, the furore ignored the fact that there is another way to improve players.

With a brand new coaching team in place, it was always likely that a refresh in ideas on the pitches of the AXA Training Centre would lead to some players getting much better.

Slot is renowned for his hands-on work during training and the 45-year-old has already given this Liverpool team a taste of that.

And while the likes of Mohamed Salah look incredibly refreshed, perhaps the main change in performance so far this season has come from Ryan Gravenberch.

Gravenberch has filled the void left by the Reds not signing a new midfielder this summer and has so far done it brilliantly.

And speaking on The Kelly & Wrighty Show, pundit Ian Wright has claimed that on the training pitch is probably where the biggest change has occurred.

“His defensive work in that particular game [against Man United] was something they would have looked at and thought ‘wow’ because he is not a natural No.6, he’s more of a No.8 who wants to get forward into the box and scores goals,” says Wright.

“But they must have been pleasantly surprised or they’ve seen in training how good he is doing that defensive role if he gets himself in that position.

“We know Liverpool, they go for their man and if they don’t get their man like Zubimendi, they don’t then just go for the next one.

“They are happy to wait and see and they’ve obviously tried Ryan in there and, at the moment three games in, it looks very solid.”

Liverpool could come back for Martin Zubimendi

Along with Slot himself, Gravenberch has been the star of the show for Liverpool this season.

Few had predicted that he would shine so much in a deeper-lying role, but the 22-year-old really has been excellent.

Gravenberch was brilliant against Man United and deserves all of the plaudits coming his way.

Nevertheless, as per journalist David Lynch on Tuesday, Liverpool could still come back in for Martin Zubimendi in January.

The Reds had wanted Zubimendi to do the job that Gravenberch is doing now. And despite the good performances of the Netherlands international, it seems that interest remains in the Real Sociedad man. Until then, though, Ryan is the man.
