Liverpool look set to end the transfer window having failed to find a remedy for the troublesome defensive midfield position.
The Reds have been scouring the market for the best option ever since Fabinho left the club last summer.
However, having been unsuccessful in attempts to sign Moises Caicedo in 2023 and then Martin Zubimendi earlier this year, Liverpool are still searching for a solution.
The problem is clearly one that has been on the mind of Arne Slot. The Liverpool head coach went all in for Zubimendi having identified the position as being in need of an upgrade.
But after he chose to stay with Real Sociedad, it emerged that Liverpool had no alternative to Zubimendi. With the window set to end and no new player brought in, there now looks set to be an unexpected chance for a player already at the club.

Tyler Morton set for Liverpool chance
Liverpool supporters have every right to feel aggrieved by their club’s decision not to sign a new defensive midfielder.
The Reds have had plenty of time to find the right player and it is a poor show that they could not highlight anyone other than Zubimendi.
Nevertheless, it’s worth pointing out that Liverpool do still have some good options in midfield.
In Stefan Bajcetic and Tyler Morton, they also have two young players who look well suited to what Slot wants from his deep-lying midfielders.

There had been high hopes for Bajcetic in particular under Slot, but the 19-year-old will not get his chance this season. Bajcetic will instead spend the season on loan at RB Salzburg.
While Bajcetic’s loan has surprised the player himself, though, it did potentially leave the door open for Morton to step through.
However, Morton was in talks with Bayer Leverkusen earlier this week, meaning that option also looked likely to be taken off the table.
Now, though, Liverpool and Leverkusen have broken off talks for Morton. He is not going anywhere this summer. And with Bajcetic out of the way and no new player brought in, things are looking unexpectedly good for the academy graduate.
Is Tyler Morton the answer for Liverpool?
There will be plenty who will likely dismiss the possibility that Morton could be a long-term solution for Liverpool’s midfield.
However, we’d argue that those people can’t have seen much of the 21-year-old over the past two seasons.
Morton has spent both of those out on-loan in the Championship and has developed into a really good player. The fact that he had interest from the likes of Leverkusen and RB Leipzig to the tune of £20m shows what a talent he is.
For now, he’s of course unlikely to be in the team. But with Curtis Jones injured at the moment, Morton is just one more injury or two away from being a starter in Liverpool’s side.
At the very least Morton should be set for a chance in the Carabao Cup, and if allowed to show what he can do then there is every chance he can supply some much needed answers for Liverpool.
