£10m player set to sign for Crystal Palace after being rejected by Liverpool

Liverpool are rapidly running out of time if they are to add anything extra to their squad this summer.

The Reds have only signed two players since the end of last season, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa coming in.

While both Mamardashvili and Chiesa could prove to be good signings, Liverpool supporters may be frustrated that areas such as defensive midfield and centre-back have not been addressed.

As the clock ticks towards Friday’s deadline, Liverpool will also have one eye on any players who could leave their first-team squad.

Perhaps the main candidate to keep a watch over is Caoimhin Kelleher. Nottingham Forest have been trying to sign Kelleher and one of the dominoes in that saga may have just fallen.

Matt Turner set to sign for Crystal Palace

With just hours left in the window, it seems unlikely that Liverpool would let Kelleher leave now.

The Irishman is still a very valuable member of the squad and his quality as Alisson Becker’s understudy should not be taken for granted.

If the Reds were to sell Kelleher, then they’d certainly have a big job on to replace him.

Perhaps with that in mind, Forest attempted to take Kelleher away from Liverpool and replace him all in one go by offering the Reds a cash plus Matt Turner offer on Thursday.

Liverpool rejected the chance to sign Turner, though, with the bid seen as not even being close to what the Reds were asking for in order to sell Kelleher.

With the American goalkeeper left a little in limbo, then, journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that he is now on the way to join Crystal Palace instead.

“Crystal Palace agree deal with Nottingham Forest to sign Matt Turner as new GK,” says Romano. “He’s the replacement for Sam Johnstone who signed for Wolves. Medical today.”

How does this affect Liverpool?

This could potentially have a big knock on effect at Liverpool. Although Turner – who Forest signed for £10m in 2023 – is seemingly seen as being surplus to requirements at the City Ground, he is still one of three first-team goalkeepers on the books.

That he is being let go does suggest that they have somebody else coming in the other way.

For the moment, we still think that is unlikely to be Kelleher. However, there have been claims that Forest are ready to improve their bid for Kelleher, which could give Liverpool a decision to make.

In our opinion, if Forest reach the £25m or so asking price, then the Reds should let the Ireland international go and put faith in Vitezslav Jaros as the new number two.

Kelleher is out of contract in two year’s time and his value will never be higher than it is now. Jaros is not on the 25-year-old’s level, but he also deserves the chance to show what he can do.
