How Juventus fans are really reacting to Federico Chiesa leaving them for Liverpool

Liverpool have left it late to make their moves in the transfer market this summer.

The Reds still have a little time left to add some more quality to their squad, but look unlikely to do too much between now and Friday’s deadline.

For supporters, that will likely be a disappointment. Heading into the summer, fans felt that the Liverpool squad was badly in need of an elite defensive midfielder and a new centre-back.

With so little time left in the window, it currently looks as though Liverpool will bring in neither. That has the potential to frustrate and anger the Anfield faithful.

They seemingly won’t be the only fanbase left reeling by what their club have or have not done in the market this year, though.

Juventus fans ‘up in arms’ over Federico Chiesa

Despite the lack of two key signings so far, Liverpool do look set to do some business before the deadline passes.

Federico Chiesa has travelled to Liverpool to put the seal on a move which has been described as ‘too good to turn down’ for the Reds.

Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal of around £10.9m plus add-ons with Juventus to sign Chiesa, who they themselves bought for £54m just four years ago.

Chiesa lit up the Allianz Stadium following his signing, but injury issues and a falling out with then manager Max Allegri mean that the 26-year-old leaves under a bit of a cloud.

And speaking to Sky Sports about Chiesa’s exit, Italian football expert Mina Rzouki says that Juventus’ fans are upset about losing the winger.

“Fans are up in arms about him leaving, because of the promise he’s shown – he was meant to be the future of the team,” Rzouki explains. “It hasn’t really worked out.

“It’s very difficult to blame the player for all of this, when he arrived he took the club by storm. He was brilliant to watch under Andrea Pirlo, so agile, direct and mobile and was always coming to Juventus’ rescue,” she adds.

“But he suffered an ACL injury in January 2022, and we’re yet to see him coming back to the player we’re used to.”

Why are Juventus selling Federico Chiesa?

Already, rival supporters are writing Chiesa off as a has-been because of the low price of the deal and the fact that Juventus were willing to move him on.

But as Rzouki alludes to, the fanbase’s reaction says a lot more about how the player is perceived.

Continuing for Sky Sports, the expert says that despite fans being upset, there are several reasons for Chiesa being shipped off this summer.

“When it came to Thiago Motta taking over, it seemed like this was his opportunity,” she says.

“But with one year on his deal, nothing agreed and rumours about him wanting so much money, Juventus want to be sustainable and Motta decided he’s not the type of player who will fit into his plan.”

All the better for Liverpool.
