Liverpool set to miss out on £60m former Everton player who’s decided to join PSG

Liverpool have not had much luck when it comes to transfers this summer.

The Reds have tried several things to bolster their first-team squad, but have not been able to get a signing over the line.

The highest profile effort came in trying to lure Martin Zubimendi away from hometown club Real Sociedad. When that didn’t work, Liverpool retreated into darkness.

Although it has been claimed that Liverpool have no alternative to Zubimendi, there are some out there who could fill his boots. Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been named as a target in the past, for example.

However, while we wait and see whether a move for the Brazilian materialises, one of his Atalanta teammates has reportedly made his own transfer decision.

Ademola Lookman chooses PSG

Liverpool are no strangers to the quality within Atalanta’s squad. La Dea unexpectedly dumped them out of the Europa League last season.

The 3-0 result in the first-leg at Anfield raised plenty of eyebrows, but the Reds already knew plenty about them, having reportedly been targeting Teun Koopmeiners since before he even joined Atalanta.

Another player in Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad who Liverpool were a little overly familiar with was Ademola Lookman.

Lookman has caused Liverpool issues in the past, most notably getting a damaging winner against them for Leicester in 2021.

On the back of the Nigerian’s hat-trick in the Europa League final, there were claims this week that Liverpool were looking to sign Lookman in a £60m move before transfer deadline day.

However, taking to X on Thursday evening, journalist Florian Plettenberg says the 26-year-old has decided he wants to join PSG.

“Ademola Lookman has reached a total verbal agreement with Paris Saint-Germain. 26 y/o versatile striker wants to join PSG with immediate effect,” says Plettenberg.

“Paris in direct contact with Atalanta Bergamo but negotiations about a permanent deal currently stalling. Arsenal, closely monitoring the situation in case the deal falls through!”

Will Liverpool sign a new forward?

Some weeks ago, there were suggestions that Liverpool could sign two new forwards before transfer deadline day.

However, with just seven days to go before the window closes, that now seems incredibly unlikely.

In fact, at the moment it seems a long shot that Liverpool will sign even one player, let alone that being a forward. As the clock ticks down, the links have dried up.

If there is one attacker coming through the door late on, though, we’d put Johan Bakayoko forward as the most likely candidate.

Bakayoko could still move late in the window and Liverpool have been linked with the PSV Eindhoven man for months. It won’t be Lookman, it probably won’t be anybody, but there’s still that little bit of hope.
