A round-up of the latest Liverpool news as Anfield chiefs make their decision over the transfer of Kaoru Mitoma and identify the Reds’ dream replacement for Joe Gomez.

Neil Mellor praises Liverpool record-breaker Mohamed Salah

Neil Mellor has praised what Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool during their opening weekend win at Ipswich Town. The Reds’ Egyptian King impressed the club’s ex-forward at the Tractor Boys last Saturday as he scored a record ninth goal in matchweek one of a top-flight season.

No player has ever scored more goals in the opening matchweek of a Premier League term than Salah to date. The 32-year-old reacted well to Leif Davis failing to intercept a through ball from Dominik Szoboszlai to slot home the Anfield outfit’s second goal of the encounter.

Salah even assisted Diogo Jota to break the deadlock for the perfect start to his season. The forward will hope his form leads Salah to surpassing his 18 goals plus 10 assists set over last term. Mellor also found what Liverpool’s Salah showed away to Ipswich to be breathtaking.

“He is just unbelievable,” Mellor told LFCTV GO. “Season after season, he just delivers. It’s not just the goals – it’s assists, as well. He is a joy to watch, fully fit, at it, just magnificent.”

Liverpool mark Marc Guehi as a transfer replacement for Joe Gomez

The future of Joe Gomez at Anfield entering the final weeks of the transfer window remains uncertain. But Liverpool have already identified a replacement for the centre-back in Crystal Palace superstar Marc Guehi, who captained the Eagles in a 2-1 loss at Brentford on Sunday.

That is according to The Athletic, which reports that Liverpool might say goodbye to Gomez and even Sepp van den Berg before the market slams shut. So, Anfield chiefs have marked a move for Guehi as one potentiality with captain Virgil van Dijk also out of contract next year.

Guehi is widely sought-after with a number of Premier League sides fans of the 24-year-old, who was also one of England’s most consistent performers through Euro 2024 this summer. Gareth Southgate trusted the 16-cap gem to play in every available tie en route to the final.

Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Kaoru Mitoma as Anfield chiefs see the Brighton & Hove Albion forward as a future transfer target. That is according to Caught Offside, which reports that the Merseyside natives are unlikely to move this summer but are fans of the Japan star.

Despite still being yet to sign any first-team players this summer, Arne Slot is largely content with the quality of the squad he adopted from Jurgen Klopp. So, Liverpool have already put some focus on future windows and believe Mitoma can be a real candidate to join one day.

Mitoma has hit the ground running this season with one goal in Brighton’s 3-0 win away to Everton in their first fixture. The 27-year-old scored at the back post to break the deadlock after 25 minutes, the perfect way to return from the back he injury picked up this February.
