Liverpool could be set for a busy end to the transfer window as plenty still hangs in the balance.

The Reds have so far remained completely silent during the off-season, a move which has led to angst and bemusement amongst the fanbase.

Wit just 10 days left before the market closes, there still feels like plenty that could be done for Liverpool, though.

Much of that pertains to outgoings. However, some moves away from Anfield could be set to force Liverpool’s hand in terms of bringing players in, too.

The future of Joe Gomez in particular has been a big topic this week. If the 27-year-old does end up leaving, then Arne Slot absolutely has to replace him.

Liverpool monitoring potential Marc Guehi move

Gomez will absolutely not be an easy man to find a replacement for. The England international may not be the first name on the teamsheet for Slot, but he is a vital part of the Liverpool squad.

His ability to play all across the backline has possibly led to Gomez playing away from his favoured centre-back position in recent years. But it is an extremely big string to his bow.

Nevertheless, it does appear that Slot actually sees Liverpool’s No.2 as purely being a centre-back. And at present, Gomez is the fourth choice.

As a result, it becomes quite a bit easier for the Reds to replace a specialist centre-back who has three players ahead of him in the pecking order.

According to The Athletic, though, this is not necessarily what Liverpool would end up doing if Gomez heads for the door.

They claim that the Reds ‘appreciate’ £65m-rated Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as they look at the centre-back market in anticipation of Gomez going.

With Sepp van den Berg also potentially leaving and Virgil van Dijk in the last year of his contact, Liverpool are said to be considering Guehi as an option.

However, for the moment, Newcastle are reportedly the only team to enter ‘meaningful talks’ about signing the 24-year-old. With time running out this summer, Guehi is claimed to be ‘one to watch’ this week.

Liverpool should sign Marc Guehi

There is a genuine danger now that Liverpool end the transfer window completely empty-handed.

If Gomez stays and that remains the case, it will be disappointing but manageable. Should the former Charlton youngster leave and Liverpool still fail to make a signing, though, that is unforgivable.

There is an argument to be had that the Reds actually need to sign a new centre-back whether Gomez stays or goes.

Van Dijk’s situation has not been resolved and Liverpool are going to have to replace the captain sooner or later anyway.

As a result, we think signing Guehi would make a lot of sense. Described as a defender with ‘phenomenal pace‘ by former Palace boss Alan Pardew, he could be a signing for now as well as the future.
