Liverpool got their new season off to the perfect start as they beat Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road.

Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold impressed in the victory, which leaves Liverpool joint-top of the Premier League.

Only one game has been played, of course, but new boss Arne Slot could not have asked for a much better start.

He still has plenty of hurdles to overcome in the coming days, particularly given the lack of signings made in the summer transfer window.

Time is running out for Slot to bring in new faces to Anfield, while Liverpool have been told to keep Joe Gomez amid his links to Newcastle United.

Neil Mellor wowed by record-breaking Mohamed Salah

But Reds supporters will certainly be satisfied about Slot’s start on the pitch, with Salah on Diogo Jota netting in the opening day win.

And it was the former who stood out in particular for former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor, who said on LFCTV GO: “He is just unbelievable, season after season he just delivers.

“It’s not just the goals, it’s assists as well, he is a joy to watch, fully fit, at it, just magnificent.”

Mohamed Salah helps Liverpool overcome stubborn Ipswich

Ipswich certainly made life difficult for Slot and his players at Portman Road, with the home fans really getting behind their team.

It was an unsurprisingly electric atmosphere inside the stadium after the club’s promotion from the Championship last season, but the Reds were on hand to spoil the party.

After a nervy first half from the visitors, Jota and Salah scored in the 60th and 65th minutes respectively to secure all three points.

Salah now has a stunning total of 212 goals from his 350 Liverpool appearances, while his assists tally sits at 90 after he set up Jota’s opener.

Keeping him on Merseyside for as long as possible should be a priority for the powers that be at Anfield, with Salah key to any success Slot may enjoy in the months to come.
