Liverpool are keeping an eye on ‘special’ Brighton player and could try to sign him in the future

It has been an incredibly disappointing transfer window for Liverpool supporters up to this point.

With just 10 days left for the Reds to make signings in, they are yet to do any business at all.

While Liverpool have sat on their hands, their Premier League rivals have been busy. The Reds are the only side in the top division without a new addition to their name.

One of the most active clubs have been Brighton. The Seagulls are flush with cash having sold the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister for big money. Brighton even signed Mats Wieffer, from Arne Slot’s old club Feyenoord.

Wieffer had been linked with Liverpool as they look to sort out their midfield. However, it has now been reported that one of the Dutchman’s new teammates is the one currently catching Liverpool’s eye.

Liverpool keeping tabs on Kaoru Mitoma

Brighton are rightly the envy of many similar sized clubs in the Premier League at the moment. The South Coast side have operated so smartly in the transfer window for years now.

This summer appears to have been no different, with a 3-0 opening day win away at Everton on Saturday signalling an impressive start for Fabian Hurzeler’s new look team.

One of the key players during that win was Kaoru Mitoma. The Japanese winger opened the scoring and was labelled as ‘special’ after the game by teammate Danny Welbeck [beINSPORTS].

Mitoma has previously been linked with Liverpool having had a superb season in 2022/23.

Injuries denied the 27-year-old a bigger role last year, but according to Caught Offside, this has not dampened Liverpool’s enthusiasm.

They claim that the Reds are ‘keeping an eye on Mitoma’s situation’ as they plot a potential move.

However, any transfer would seemingly have to wait. Mitoma is reportedly a ‘longer-term’ target for Liverpool and is not expected to move in the final days of this summer’s window.

Slot is claimed to be happy with the Liverpool squad for the time being and will not actively look to make additions unless the right players become available.

Will Liverpool sign Kaoru Mitoma?

Mitoma has been one of the real success stories of Brighton’s recruitment strategy. Bought for a small sum from Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale, he is now worth a whole lot more.

As a pacy, tricky winger, you could see exactly where Mitoma would fit in at Liverpool.

However, given that the Japan international is now 27, and will turn 28 before next season starts, we don’t see him being a target in the future for Liverpool.

They surely will like what they’ve seen from him and perhaps he has been on their shortlist in the past. But there were claims that Mitoma turned Liverpool down last year and it does feel as though the boat for a transfer has possibly been and gone.

If Mitoma has a big season for Brighton, maybe the Reds will feel the time is right to go against their usual policy and sign a slightly older player. For now, though, this would be a surprise.
