Liverpool defender Joe Gomez continues to be linked with a move away, with Newcastle among his suitors.

Arne Slot wants Gomez to stay and fight for his place at Liverpool after the player was missing from the matchday squad against Ipswich.

Liverpool want £34million for Gomez, with Newcastle and Aston Villa both chasing the England international.

The centre-back, who can also play at full-back, joined the Reds from Charlton Athletic as an 18-year-old in 2015.

Gomez made 51 appearances in all competitions last season under Jurgen Klopp, with his displays leading to a spot in the England Euro 2024 squad.

But Gomez could now leave Anfield before the summer transfer window draws to a close, with his future very much up in the air.

Ally McCoist has now shared his thoughts on the player, saying on talkSPORT (7.27am, 20 August): “I think he would be a good signing for anybody.

“I think he would be a good signing for Villa, good signing for Newcastle. I would be surprised if Liverpool let him go at this moment in time. I really would, I genuinely would.

“He can play anywhere across the backline, and that gives him a great appeal particularly with clubs I think he would be well suited to, Newcastle and indeed Villa. But I would be really surprised if Liverpool let him go.”

Will Arne Slot allow Joe Gomez to leave?

Gomez has been a superb servant for Liverpool, with the player often asked to play out of position for the Reds.

He has often stepped up when needed, with his versatility really helping Klopp out last season when injuries struck the likes of Andy Robertson.

But his time at Anfield could be coming to an end, with the 27-year-old certain to still be upset after missing out on the first match of the new season.

Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Jarell Quansah were selected by Slot, but Quansah did only last until half-time.

His withdrawal for Ibrahima Konate at the break proves how brutal Slot is going to be at his new club, which may suggest that Gomez will be gone sooner rather than later.
