Darwin Nunez impressed by Liverpool youngster in training after claims he could be sold

Liverpool look set to move a number of young players on before this summer’s transfer deadline.

With so many of his bigger stars facing a delayed return to training this pre-season, Arne Slot has had chance to get to know plenty of the Reds’ talented youngsters.

Some have obviously caught his eye, with Trey Nyoni clearly the standout amongst that. The 17-year-old looks set for a breakout season at Anfield.

For others, the axe seems to have fallen. Bobby Clark didn’t even get chance to show Slot what he can do after being injured throughout the off-season, but the 19-year-old is set to be sold to RB Salzburg.

Another who could reportedly be on his way out of the AXA Training Centre is forward Ben Doak. But if Darwin Nunez has anything to say about it, maybe Doak will be staying after all.

There have been very high hopes for Doak after he burst onto the scene in 2022/23. Arriving from Celtic in 2022, the 18-year-old shot through the youth teams and into the first-team squad.

However, injuries have hampered him and it has now been claimed that Doak could be sold permanently in what remains of the transfer window.

Quite why Liverpool would be keen to move the Scottish teenager on so soon into his career is a bit of a mystery.

Doak did well in pre-season and in fairness he does often look a cut above a lot of his peers from the Liverpool academy, Nyoni being one exception.

And it’s obvious that the senior players at Liverpool are also impressed by the pacy winger.

Mo Salah took Doak under his wing last summer and it now looks as though another of the Reds’ superstar forwards is doing the same 12 months on.

During LFCTV’s Inside Training video, showing the goings on in Liverpool’s Thursday preparations before facing Ipswich on Saturday, Nunez can be seen greeting Doak in the changing rooms.

“What a player!” says the Uruguayan as he clasps hands with the young man. His English is really coming on.

What should Liverpool do with Ben Doak?

Suggestions that Liverpool might be willing to sell Doak were met with a wholly negative reaction from supporters online.

Doak has shown so much promise throughout his time at the club so far and once he puts the injuries behind him is only going to get better.

Having said that, he does need to play more football. There’s little sense in keeping him around this season if he isn’t going to play.

You get the feeling that if Doak goes out and plays regularly somewhere, then he could really explode. That should be Liverpool’s aim, but on-loan, not a permanent sale.

Premier League clubs are seemingly interested in the Scotland U21 international. But we’d maybe suggest a Championship spell with more guaranteed playing time would be better suited.
