Liverpool’s transfer window is only just beginning as the Reds ramp up their preparations for the new season.
Having given Arne Slot the chance to review his players during the summer, the Reds are now looking to get some business done.
After watching three friendlies and plenty of training sessions in the US, Slot has seemingly decided that Liverpool need to bolster their midfield.
As a result, Liverpool are trying to sign Martin Zubimendi. The 25-year-old is facing the tough decision of whether or not to leave his boyhood club.
But with Zubimendi weighing up what to do, it seems as though the Reds may have found themselves a second option as a new midfield signing.

Liverpool ask about Bruno Guimaraes
Liverpool have no doubt assessed plenty of players before landing on Zubimendi as their top target.
Ever since it became clear that a new midfielder may be targeted, a number of different stars have been linked.
Atalanta’s Ederson looked like he could join Liverpool at one stage while Alan Varela has been another active Reds target.
But neither Ederson nor Varela really stack up to Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Bruno for a long while. It had looked likely that the Brazilian could leave Newcastle this summer. With just three weeks left in the window, though, Bruno is still at St James’ Park.

However, according to Give Me Sport, that could still change over he coming weeks. They claim that those ‘close’ to the 26-year-old are yet to rule out any ‘late drama’ during the transfer window.
With that in mind, Liverpool have reportedly made an enquiry as to the availability of Bruno.
The answer appears to have been that it would take an ‘astronomical’ fee to get the Brazil international out of Newcastle. His £100m release clause has expired and the Magpies can set their price as a result.
Despite Liverpool asking the question, Man City are claimed to be the side more likely to push ahead with a bid at this point. However, the Premier League champions are said to value Bruno more at £80m.
Who is Liverpool’s Martin Zubimendi alternative?
Although there’s little question that Bruno would be a top signing for Liverpool, we also simply cannot see the Reds blowing the kind of money it would take to sign him.
Zubimendi would cost more or less half what the Brazil international would and is younger as well.
Nevertheless, if the Spaniard says no to Liverpool, then it will be interesting to see who FSG will look at.
It has even been claimed that Liverpool have no alternative to Zubimendi. If he turns down the chance to move to Anfield, they will simply head into the season with what they have.
That would be a risky strategy in our opinion, but it feels much more likely than the Reds spending nine figures to get Bruno.
