Liverpool are locked in a nervous wait to see whether they are about to make their first signing of the summer.
The Reds have taken a considered approach to this year’s window, preferring to sit back and take their time over doing business.
There are plenty of reasons and indeed plenty of merits behind taking this stance. It has given Arne Slot the chance to get a proper look at the Liverpool squad without complicating things with new arrivals, for example.
But one negative has been that it now puts pressure on Liverpool to get what they need done over the next few weeks.
With time running out before August the 30th, the Reds do not have a whole lot of time to sit on their hands while they wait for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi to make a decision about joining them.

Martin Zubimendi has Liverpool ‘belief’
Liverpool’s interest in Zubimendi is now entering its third day in the public domain. There has to be a decision soon.
From a Reds point of view, it should not be underestimated how big a decision the Spaniard’s is. It has been claimed that if he turns them down, Liverpool do not have a Zubimendi alternative.
As a result, it really is all or nothing on the 25-year-old. He is their top target to fill the slightly problematic No.6 position and if they can’t get him, the Reds will make do with what they have.
Although that would not be the end of the world, it would be nice to have a little refresh before the new season.
And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, there is still every chance that Zubimendi comes down on the side of Liverpool. Speaking on his YouTube channel late on Thursday night, Romano said that the Spain international is ‘really, really tempted’ by the Reds.
“Liverpool are going very big for Martin Zubimendi,” says the transfer expert. “The player is really tempted. The player is really, really tempted by this possibility.

“He believes that Liverpool is really something special. He rejected many clubs in recent years but he believes that Liverpool could be something really special for his career,” he adds.
“So, on one side he’s very tempted by this possibility, on the other, Real Sociedad after they understood that Liverpool are coming really strong, prepared to negotiate around the release clause or even pay the release clause, they started to work with their board to keep the player at the club.
“[They have been] presenting their idea for this season with the manager also talking to Zubimendi directly to try to persuade him.
“So, he’s now in a complicated situation, it’s complicated for him to make a decision. Lets see what happens but Liverpool are still there waiting for him to make his decision.”
D-day for Martin Zubimendi and Liverpool
You would think that Friday could perhaps end up being the crucial day for Zubimendi and Liverpool.
Zubimendi has been training with Sociedad and has even been included in their squad to play in Friday’s friendly with Union Berlin.
However, behind the scenes, it is surely crunch time now. Enough time has passed for Zubimendi to weigh up the prospect of leaving against the decision to stay.
In our opinion, the fact that La Real are pushing so hard would suggest that they believe the midfielder is more out than in. Reports from Wednesday claimed that Real Sociedad were resigned to losing Zubimendi.
Although a little hope does seem to have returned, it still seems like this is an opportunity that Zubimendi feels he cannot turn down. Let’s hope for a final answer on Friday.
