Ben Foster tells Virgil van Dijk how he really feels about Liverpool’s Alisson Becker as a goalkeeper

As Arne Slot comes in at Liverpool, he is set to take on one of the most complete squads in world football.

Jurgen Klopp has left the Reds in a very good place, with world-class players sprinkled throughout the team.

One of the most important in the Liverpool squad – and quite probably one of the best – is goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

There has been a lot of speculation about Alisson’s future with the Reds so far this summer. But as we head into August, the Brazilian looks to be staying put.

With so much change going on elsewhere in Liverpool’s goalkeeping department, that can only be a good thing for the new head coach.

Ben Foster reveals Alisson Becker thoughts

No Liverpool fan will need telling just how important their goalkeeper is to their team. That’s why suggestions that Alisson could move to Saudi Arabia have been so galling.

Over the past couple of seasons the 31-year-old has a good claim to have been Liverpool’s best player.

While others around him floundered, Alisson was brilliant in 2022/23. And although injury disrupted 2023/24 for him, the Brazil international was still in top shape.

If Liverpool were to lose Alisson, there’s not really any way that they could easily replace him.

The best way to demonstrate how good – and how important – Alisson is, is by listening to his fellow goalkeeper’s union.

Being a former Man United and England shot-stopper with 370 Premier League appearances to his name, Ben Foster knows a thing or two about keeping goal.

And speaking to Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk for Amazon Prime, Foster has admitted that he has long since seen Alisson as the best in the business.

“For me, the best goalkeeper in the world,” the former ‘keeper tells Van Dijk. “Has been for a few years now.”

When is Alisson back in training?

Despite the constant speculation, it does now feel as though Arne Slot will be able to count on the best goalkeeper in the world for next season.

Alisson turned down approaches from Saudi Arabia in March and if there are any more between now and September, it feels likely that he’ll do the same.

So, with that saga hopefully almost behind us, we can instead focus on seeing Alisson working with new goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte.

With Adrian leaving Liverpool along with goalkeeping coaches John Achterberg and Jack Robinson, there is now even more responsibility on the Reds’ No.1.

With Otte implementing some new training methods, it will be interesting to see how Alisson takes to them. As per the Liverpool ECHO, the Liverpool goalie may link up with his teammates at some stage of their current tour of the USA.
