Liverpool really need to start making moves in the summer transfer window, with many of their rivals doing exactly that.

Arne Slot and FSG will undoubtedly be taking their time regarding any new players at Anfield, which is understandable given that the manager has only just arrived.

At the same time, however, the new season is rapidly approaching, with Liverpool not able to fall behind their rivals in terms of landing transfer targets.

Liverpool are ‘not averse’ to signing a new defender this summer, but one player they won’t be signing is Leny Yoro.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Lille youngster has agreed to join Manchester United, with Liverpool having targeting Yoro this summer.

Liverpool chasing Goncalo Inacio and Marc Guehi

That should force Slot and Anfield sporting director Richard Hughes to quickly move on to other central defensive targets.

One defender back that has been targeted is Goncalo Inacio, with Sporting Lisbon willing to compromise on his €60million (£51.6million) release clause.

The 22-year-old appeared 49 times for the Portuguese club last season, before representing Portugal at Euro 2024.

But also on Liverpool’s radar is Marc Guehi, who featured heavily for England at the major competition in Germany.

Liverpool made an approach to sign Crystal Palace ace Guehi earlier this year, with the 24-year-old having impressed for the Eagles last season.

Liverpool should prioritise Marc Guehi over Goncalo Inacio

Both Inacio and Guehi are seemingly available for similar fees this summer, but it is the latter that the Reds should focus their efforts on.

He boasts more experience than the former, and importantly knows what it takes to compete against the very best that the Premier League has to offer.

Such knowledge of dealing with the English top flight is what Slot needs right now, with Guehi also performing admirably as England reached the Euro 2024 final.

It also seems that the Eagles star is likely to be in less demand than Inacio, with the Anfield club often finding it difficult to compete with European superpowers for young talent.

Virgil van Dijk is in need of a sturdy partner in central defence, with the captain even able to shift onto his favoured right foot should the left-sided Guehi arrive on Merseyside.
