Gary Lineker shares how he would react if Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp were appointed England’s new manager

Liverpool supporters are still dealing with the reality that Jurgen Klopp is no longer their manager.

Klopp won the heart and mind of every single Reds fan throughout his magnificent reign at their club.

The German has since committed to continuing to be a part of the club, confirming that he has taken up a role with the Liverpool Foundation.

But although we may still see Klopp around Liverpool and around Anfield from time to time, it simply will not be the same.

For now, Jurgen is on his holiday and enjoying some well-earnt time off. But sooner or later, Liverpool supporters may have to get used to seeing him in a new job. With that in mind, Klopp has been linked to the vacant England manager position.

Gary Lineker reacts to Jurgen Klopp England rumours

After being beaten in the final of Euro 2024, Gareth Southgate has stepped down as England manager.

For Liverpool supporters, that may mean nothing at all. Plenty of fans do not actively support the national team with some even joyously rooting against them.

Certainly, Southgate’s poor treatment of Trent Alexander-Arnold at the recent tournament and beyond will not have helped that feeling.

Nevertheless, even those of an anti-England persuasion may be tempted to hop aboard should Klopp take over the reigns.

However, the chances of Klopp joining England are very slim indeed. Despite that, Three Lions legend Gary Lineker has offered what his reaction would be to the former Liverpool manager succeeding Southgate.

“I’ve always thought it should be an English manager if possible but if you said to me Jurgen Klopp would do it or Pep Guardiola would do it, which I suspect they wouldn’t, then that’s a little bit different,” Lineker told The Rest Is Football.

“You’d go ‘cor’ because they are absolutely proven and elite. Jurgen Klopp is not working at the moment, he wants to take time out anywhere, it might not be the right timing for him, I think he has turned down one or two jobs already.

“If either of those were available you’d go ‘wow’. But I think it might come down to the English boys.”

Jamie Carragher offers his opinion

Although Lineker is enthusiastic about the possibility of Klopp joining England, not everyone has been in agreement.

Like Lineker, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher thinks it should be an English manager in charge of the national team.

As a result, Carragher says he does not want Klopp to be considered to be next in the hot seat at St George’s Park.

Luckily for Carra, it seems fairly certain that he’ll get his wish. Klopp may well manage a national team one day, but that will surely be Germany, not England.

For now, the boss is enjoying his break and perhaps getting his teeth into some work with the LFC Foundation in the near future. Let’s draw a line under this.
