Liverpool players are gearing up to meet their new head coach this week.

It now feels like a relatively long time since Jurgen Klopp walked away from the club at the end of last season.

Arne Slot was the coach chosen to replace one of the greatest manager’s in Liverpool’s history. Patience will be required from everyone at the club.

The process of Slot stepping into Klopp’s shoes will get kicked up a notch this week as the Liverpool players not involved in the summer internationals return to the AXA Training Centre.

With those available from the first-team squad joining on Friday, some of the most promising young players from the Liverpool academy are already back and trying to make an impression.

Ben Doak looking to make Arne Slot impression

Part of the reason Liverpool liked Slot as a replacement for Klopp was because of his tendency to give youth a chance.

The Reds have a long tradition of trusting academy players, as Jurgen expertly demonstrated when bringing through Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley and a host of others last season.

Quansah and Bradley may be the brightest lights from the youth teams, but they are not the only ones shining.

Just before he left, Klopp himself named six youngsters who Slot will be able to count on as he settles into life at Anfield.

One who was missing from that half-dozen was Ben Doak. Klopp rates the Scot highly though, having trusted Doak enough to give him a Liverpool first-team debut at 16 in 2022.

Having been fit enough to play just five times last season though, some will have forgotten just what a talent Doak is.

But according to the Liverpool ECHO, the 18-year-old is on his way to reminding everyone. They report that Doak returned with the first batch of players on Monday and is ‘desperate’ to make up for lost time.

With a few days to impress Slot and his new coaching team before the rest of the squad return, Doak is said to be hellbent on showing them exactly why he is so highly rated.

Ben Doak ready for big season

There’s no getting away from the fact that last season was a huge disappointment for Doak. This time last year the teenager was preparing to push on and become a mainstay in the Liverpool squad.

Through no fault of his own, that has not been what has happened. Doak has been beset by injury problem after injury problem.

Nevertheless, there was a reminder at the end of the campaign of just how much is expected of the former Celtic prospect.

Despite his lowly appearances for the season, Doak was called into Steve Clarke’s provisional squad for Euro 2024. Although he didn’t make the final cut, Doak was said to have been ‘amazing‘ in the way he took it all in his stride.

With a new manager, everyone at Liverpool is about to get their slate wiped clean. If Doak can impress Slot in these early sessions at the club, there’s no reason he can’t push on again this year. Loads more to come.
