Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk names two ‘very strong’ countries he thinks could win Euro 2024

Liverpool will be well represented at Euro 2024, with a long list of Reds stars set to play for their countries this summer.

That perhaps won’t please incoming manager Arne Slot, who will want to work with all of his players as soon as possible.

Jurgen Klopp’s replacement will also be keen for all of his squad to be fully fit and raring to go ahead of the new season.

The players themselves will perhaps also be eager to relax after another tough campaign in all competitions.

But that won’t be the case for many European stars, with players such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Andy Robertson, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo all set to be in action for their respective nations.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk excited by England and France

The squads haven’t exactly been finalised, but one Anfield star who is certain to play for his country in Germany is Virgil van Dijk.

The Liverpool captain also wears the armband for the Netherlands, and he has now identified two countries to watch out for this summer.

“England has a very, very good team and squad, but so many other teams do as well,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports. “France are very strong. It will be interesting. I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s obviously next door as we say in Holland, so hopefully we have a lot of Dutch fans there supporting us.”

Which Liverpool players will make the England cut?

Gareth Southgate has the enviable task of cutting down his England squad for the summer tournament, having named a 33-strong preliminary group.

There is a strong Liverpool presence among the squad, including first-time senior call ups for Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones.

They have been joined by Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, but it remains to be seen how many of the four will make it on the plane.

Southgate will get the chance to see them in action between now and 8 June, when he must finalise his 26-man group.

Given their lack of experience, new faces Quansah and Jones are likely to be disappointed, but Gomez should be quietly confident of a spot, with Alexander-Arnold almost certain to be involved.
