Liverpool have seen their academy players make great strides over the course of the season.
Jurgen Klopp has always been a manager who has given youngsters a chance during his time as Liverpool boss.
However, this season has been a remarkable one even by Klopp’s standards. In Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley, the German looks to have brought through two players who will start in the first-team for years to come.
Besides that standout duo though, there’s been other players to impress, too. James McConnell, for example, has been a surprise success, while Bobby Clark looks set for a big future as well.
There are even more not currently at the club, too. Though it has largely been a disappointing season for Liverpool’s loan army, there have been some real bright spots along the way. And one of those has been hailed as a potential future starter for the Reds.

Liverpool told of youngster’s potential
It will be really interesting to see what the new Liverpool manager does with all of these top talents coming through. Not all of them will go on to find a place in the Reds squad.
One who had the opportunity to do so earlier this season was Luke Chambers. The 19-year-old was thrust into the limelight following injury to both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.
In the end, Chambers couldn’t fully grasp his chance. However, having since moved on-loan to Wigan Athletic in January, the England U20 international has been showing his quality.
This has led to a rave review from Wigan boss Shaun Maloney via Wigan Today.
“I’ve been really impressed with Luke, he’s had a brilliant loan,” Maloney gushed. “I’ve loved his personality, he’s literally thrown himself into any position I’ve asked him to do, he’s been flat out, 100 per cent. To make it really simple, we signed him in January, and he’s made our starting XI better. For a youngster to do that, it’s full credit to him.
“Last summer, I spoke to Andy Robertson a little bit about Luke, but it wasn’t going to be possible to get him on loan. Andy’s obviously a very good player, but Luke should be ambitious enough to want to try to get to that level. And when he gets the chance, hopefully he’ll be able to take it.”
Can Luke Chambers be Andy Robertson’s heir
It’s encouraging to see that Chambers is kicking on under Maloney at Wigan. Although it’s League One, it should be noted that both Quansah and Bradley cut their teeth at that level last year before stepping into the Liverpool first-team. In that respect, Chambers has a real example to follow.
Having said that, we’re not convinced that the teenager is quite as good as his peers from the academy. He’s doing well, sure, but he looked out of his depth in the senior team earlier this season.
That isn’t to say that Chambers won’t improve further – and this year will certainly help him. But we’d exercise extreme caution in saying that he can hit the heights of Robertson.
If he can, then brilliant. Robbo isn’t getting any younger and will need to be phased out at some point. We don’t think that will be for Chambers when the time comes, but we’d love to be proven wrong.
