Liverpool are continuing in talks with Michael Edwards over a new, revamped role at the club.
The Reds had reportedly made contact with Edwards in an attempt to bring him back to Anfield when Jurgen Klopp leaves this summer. However, the former sporting director turned down the approach.
Now though, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, Liverpool are refusing to take no for an answer.
“Conversations between Liverpool and Michael Edwards continue, final round of talks revealed 10 days ago as LFC are still pushing,” Romano reports this morning.
Although previously Liverpool’s transfer guru, it seems that Edwards would be in-line for a slightly bigger role should he come back. As a result, a new sporting director would still be needed. And according to Romano, Edwards has his eye on a candidate already.
“Understand Richard Hughes remains strong candidate in club’s list as part of the new structure in case Edwards will accept the job.”
Liverpool pushing for Edwards
It had initially seemed like a difficult job to convince Edwards to return to the club he made his name at. But it now looks as though things could be moving.
Having overseen such a successful period in the transfer market at Anfield, it’s no surprise that FSG want to bring their man back.
They’ll seemingly now do whatever it takes to get Edwards back onboard.
In all honesty, we like this idea. We’re not sure that going backwards is ever a good idea in football, but the fact that this would be a new, more all encompassing role for Edwards makes it interesting.
Instead of coming back to his old office, he would be moving to a bigger one, while hiring his trusted people to do his former job.

With that in mind, Hughes would seem like a steady appointment. The 44-year-old is already confirmed to be leaving his post at Bournemouth, which would point to an agreement being in place elsewhere.
It could be that he’s joining Liverpool, which would possibly sweeten the pot for Edwards, or maybe vice-versa.
Either way, the two men being brought in would be an almighty boost for the Reds as they continue their search for a new manager.
Edwards’ data driven approach is what underpinned the Klopp era. Despite a brief hiatus, it looks like it could lead Liverpool into a brand new period, too.
