Ever since the news broke in the last few weeks about Michael Edwards potentially returning to the club, it has very much consumed all of us. Given how uncertainty the sporting director situation has been at Liverpool over the last few years, having him back would be a huge bonus.
Especially to oversee this uncertain period. With Jurgen Klopp set to depart for pastures new, Liverpool will need someone at the helm to establish continuity. Someone who can oversee a stable and long-term future.
Edwards is undoubtedly the perfect man for that role. He’s worked at Liverpool before for a decade. His track record of proven world-class signings speaks for itself. He is simply one of the best people working in the business today.
Now a former Liverpool player has revealed he has been speaking to Edwards about potentially returning to the club.

Steve McManaman on Michael Edwards
Speaking in an exclusive interview to the Liverpool ECHO, Steve McManaman revealed he lives close to Michael Edwards. The Liverpool legend also told the ECHO, how he has spoken to him about the speculation linking him with a return to the club.
“They should try and bring Michael back! Of course, they should!” McManaman said. “Funnily enough, I spoke to him the other day about it as well because he lives by me and I see him regularly.”
McManaman also went onto hint at what kind of role Edwards could potentially accept if he was to return to the club, and how he may feel about a potential return.
“I don’t know in what capacity they would want to bring him back. I don’t know. I think Michael has moved on from just being a sporting director. He hasn’t said that to me personally, but he couldn’t just go back to the same role that he was doing for a long time.
“I think he’d need more. I don’t know whether he needs a new challenge. In past comments he’s made, it’s always the case that he needs a new challenge.”
These are really interesting comments from McManaman. It’s clear that he has a good relationship with Edwards. The fact that he hasn’t flat out denied Liverpool’s interest would suggest that there may be something in all the rumours.
McManaman is also right though. It wouldn’t make sense for Edwards to come back in the same role. Liverpool definitely need to offer him more than just his old position.
