It is no secret Liverpool are on the hunt to bring in a new sporting director. Over the last couple of years the sporting director role at Anfield hasn’t been the most stable of positions.
In the space of two years, the Reds have had three different sporting directors. First Michael Edwards left his role at the club. Then Julian Ward, his successor followed suit last year. And now Jorg Schmadtke has done the same after only spending around six months in his role.
It’s clear that once Klopp leaves at the end of the season, Liverpool will need stability in the position. They need someone who can be in charge of the club for the long-term, and establish continuity and a well thought-out plan.
That is why FSG has sought out Michael Edwards again. Although, it is unlikely if he were to return to the club that he would work in the same capacity. He would probably given a more encompassing role – a promotion so to say.
Meanwhile, on the sporting director front the club has already approached a few potential candidates. Including one who has reportedly agreed to join a new club next season.

Richard Hughes has agreed to join his next club
Bournemouth sporting director, Richard Hughes has been linked with a move to Anfield recently. He is also know to have a strong relationship with former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards. Now his club Bournemouth has confirmed he will be leaving his role.
And according to The Times journalist, Martin Hardy, Hughes has already agreed his next move with both Liverpool and AS Roma in the frame.
This would be a very interesting move. Obviously, given that there is speculation surrounding Michael Edwards’ return at a higher capacity than merely just being a sporting director, the fact that Hughes has left his role, who has been linked with Liverpool and who is on good terms with Edwards all seem to point in one direction.
Hughes has recently enjoyed an impressive track record at Bournemouth. He has made some shrewd signings. Especially bringing in young players like Milos Kerkez, Illia Zarbanyi and Alex Scott. All of whom are highly regarded.
