FSG tried to bring former staff member back to Liverpool straight after Jurgen Klopp announced he was leaving

All the focus is on who Liverpool will appoint as Jurgen Klopp’s successor come the end of the season. Liverpool’s next manager will hold the fate of the club for the next few years.

It’s undoubtedly one of the most important decisions FSG will make in the future of Liverpool Football Club. However, just before that, there may be an even more important decision that the club has to make – the appointment of a sporting director.

Sure, a manager is important, and the right manager is even more important. Klopp will undoubtedly be difficult to replace. But what Liverpool need more now than ever is continuity, especially at boardroom level. That’s something the Reds haven’t had at all in the last two years.

Since 2022, three sporting directors have now left Liverpool. First it was Michael Edwards, then it was Julian Ward last year and now Jorg Schmadtke has left his position at the end of the January transfer window.

What Liverpool reportedly told Michael Edwards

According to a report by The Athletic the weekend after Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to leave the club, Mike Gordon from FSG contacted Michael Edwards about coming back to Liverpool to work in a more senior role.

That offer though was rejected by Edwards, who is very content in his current role at Ludonautics, a sports advisory company which was founded by another former Liverpool boardroom member Ian Graham.

There are no surprises really to see Edwards reject the proposal to return to Liverpool. Clearly, his time at the club is up, and there is no point trying to rekindle an old flame. What Liverpool must do now is to find a new long-term successor to the sporting director role. Someone who will be in charge of the club for a long time and who will be able to implement stability in the boardroom.
