Liverpool had a good day at the office on Saturday, smashing Brentford 4-1 to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League.
However, it wasn’t all good news for the Reds. As they always seem to these days, they had to contend with a couple of new injury problems.
Curtis Jones was the first to go off, picking up what looks like a potential ankle injury after 35 minutes. Then, Diogo Jota went down with what sounds like a bad knee injury.
Finally, Liverpool’s worries were complete when Darwin Nunez didn’t come out for the second-half, replaced by Cody Gakpo.
And taking to X after the game, journalist Ian Doyle shared an update on what he spotted from all three players when boarding the team coach after the game. Thankfully, it sounds like good news for Nunez, at least.
“Curtis Jones boarded the team coach from Brentford on crutches with his left foot in a protective boot,” Doyle reports. “Diogo Jota also left on crutches with his left knee in a brace. Darwin Nunez walked through unaided and didn’t appear to be limping.”
Nunez looking good
In his post-match interview, Jurgen Klopp has already explained the reasons behind his withdrawal of Nunez at half-time. ‘Fearless’ he may be, but Darwin has had his injury wobbles.
The Uruguayan seemingly ‘felt something’ in the opening 45 minutes and was taken off as a precaution as a result. Having already seen two important players go off injured, you can’t blame Klopp for that.
In the end, neither Nunez nor Jota’s absences made a difference to Liverpool.
1-0 up at the break, there seemed to be a tough half still to come. With Brentford having created a few decent openings in the first period, the Reds will have been expecting more to come.

Things didn’t really pan out that way, though. The replacements for Nunez and Jota – Gakpo and Mohamed Salah – actually ended up putting the game to bed for Liverpool.
Both Gakpo and Salah grabbed themselves a goal and an assist apiece. Talk about instant impact.
Of course, Salah will be expected to slot straight back into the team regardless of any injury issues. For Gakpo though, that was a big couple of contributions.
As Klopp’s options dwindle more and more, the Dutchman showed up when the team really needed him. If Nunez does end up suffering more than it sounds like he’s going to, Gakpo looks ready to slot in. Let’s wait for further updates.
