Jurgen Klopp has shared why he decided to take Darwin Nunez off at half-time for Liverpool today.

Nunez was excellent in the opening 45 minutes for the Reds, setting them on the way for a 4-1 win with a superb scooped finished.

But having performed so well, the Uruguayan did not emerge for the second-half. Having already seen Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones taken off with injury, it was a big worry for Liverpool fans.

And speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Klopp admitted that Nunez had ‘felt something’ in the first-half.

“Darwin, we are not sure if he has something or not,” said the Liverpool manager.

“He felt a little bit and after already having two players off and then we can’t really change things in the second-half, that’s why we decided to bring on Cody [Gakpo], which obviously was a good idea as well.”

Klopp gives Nunez update

In light of what sounds like bad news about Jota, this is actually a slightly encouraging update from Klopp.

Of course, we don’t know exactly what the issue with Darwin. But it’s better news that he could have perhaps played on if needs be.

From that point of view though, it was definitely the right decision to take the Uruguay international off. Had he continued and then been forced off, that would have been a disaster for Liverpool.

Ahead of a big week for the club, they could really do without losing another player.

Depending on what the issue is, it seems like Nunez may possibly be out for Wednesday’s game against Luton Town. But as long as he doesn’t feel any more issues, hopefully he’ll be fine for the Carabao Cup final.

In the form that he’s in, Nunez will surely be in line to start the match against Chelsea at Wembley.

Thankfully, Mohamed Salah is now back to make up for Jota’s absence. Salah was superb today having replaced the Portugal international from the bench.

But if Nunez is missing too, Liverpool will start to look a little stretched.

Let’s hope to hear some good news on this over the rest of the weekend.
