Liverpool’s injury troubles deepened at the Gtech Community Stadium this afternoon.
Having seen Alisson Becker succumb to a hamstring injury ahead of the game, the Reds were already without a number of regular starters against Brentford.
Unfortunately, they lost two more during the first-half in West London. Firstly, Curtis Jones was forced off before – more worryingly – Diogo Jota was stretchered from the pitch.
Jota had been terrific up to that point, earning himself a delightful assist for Darwin Nunez’s opening goal. To see him go down is the last thing Jurgen Klopp needed. And providing a little more information at half-time for TNT Sports, presenter Jules Breach confirmed that the 27-year-old had suffered a knee injury.
“I’ve got an update on Liverpool’s injuries,” Breach reported from inside the players’ tunnel. “Jurgen Klopp was not happy with some of the tackles in that first-half.
“I have spoken to one of the Liverpool coaching staff in the tunnel and they confirmed that Diogo Jota’s injury is to his knee. He was stretched off past me looking in quite a lot of pain.”
Jota worrying Liverpool staff
This doesn’t sound good at all. Unfortunately, it will be a familiar feeling for Jota. He’s often been struck down just when he’s in terrific form.
And make no mistake, he’s been in terrific form. Although he didn’t get a goal this afternoon, Liverpool’s No.20 was the best player up until he was taken off.
Jota just seemed to have the bit between his teeth right from the get-go at Brentford. Determined, dogged and effective, Diogo was at the heart of everything good that Liverpool did.
His assist for Darwin Nunez’s opener was a thing of beauty. The touched header onto Nunez looks easy in some ways, but it was so perfectly weighted.

Wrestling with the Brentford defender, Jota had the presence of mind to set his striker partner through on goal. It was beautiful little touch.
In many ways, the Portugal international would have been the last player Liverpool fans will have wanted to see go off. Early into the second-half, Jota was at least seen walking inside the tunnel, but he didn’t look comfortable.
Of course, they didn’t have a half bad replacement for him. Mohamed Salah came on and before you knew it had a goal and an assist.
But one back, one out seems to be the way things are going for Liverpool right now. Let’s wait for further updates at full-time, but a knee injury never sounds good.
