What Liverpool said to Kylian Mbappe after he reached out to them about joining last year

Liverpool continue to be mentioned in connection with PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.

The 25-year-old had seemed virtually certain to join Real Madrid when his contract in Paris finally winds down this summer.

However, with reports filtering through that Mbappe is not necessarily keen on the wage package being offered by Madrid, his future remains up in the air. Throughout this never-ending transfer saga, Liverpool have continued to be mentioned as a possible destination for the World Cup winner. And according to The Independent, that’s for good reason.

They claim that Mbappe did in fact ‘reach out’ to the Reds to explore a possible move last year. It doesn’t seem as though the Frenchman got very far though, with Liverpool said to be unwilling to ‘break their entire financial strategy’ to get him. There was reportedly no offer from Anfield.

Furthermore, Mbappe’s decision to speak to Liverpool is said to have upset PSG, who seemingly saw it as a ‘lack of loyalty’ from the forward.

Arsenal are also claimed to have been contacted, with Mbappe apparently happy to move to the Emirates, too. However, the Gunners approach was reportedly the same as Liverpool’s. No deal.

Liverpool turn down Mbappe

Mbappe really does find himself in an incredibly odd situation this summer. It had forever seemed as though he was destined to join Real Madrid.

But with the money on offer in the Spanish capital perhaps not what the PSG man had expected, he’s now a little bit stuck.

Truly, it would now seem as though Mbappe pretty much has no choice but to stay at his current club once again. And we’ll all do this again in a year or two.

For a player as good as the France international, it shouldn’t really come to this. If any club is offered a star like that, then you do everything you can to make it possible.

But there seems to be a feeling with Mbappe that everything is just too much. Yes, Liverpool would surely love to have him, but not at any cost.

Having gone big on the likes of Jude Bellingham in the recent past, it seems as though even the mighty Madrid are feeling the same way. Mbappe has priced himself out of moving anywhere.

From a Liverpool point of view, you can’t help but be disappointed by that. Some may decry FSG and their lack of ambition here. But if even Real are saying no, then that isn’t really an argument we’d subscribe to.

Instead, this is simply a story of a young man who’s asking for the world. With no one – and certainly not Liverpool – ready to give it to him, there may be a big dollop of humble pie coming Kylian’s way.
