Xabi Alonso is the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. The Bayer Leverkusen manager has done a stellar job in the Bundesliga, and it’s easy to see why he would be a perfect fit for the club.

Alonso understands the essence and the ethos of Liverpool. He is well versed in understand the game in England as well. He would be no stranger to the pressures and expectations that he will be surrounded by when he takes over.

Of course, if he is the new manager he will have his own ideas as well. Things will be different next season. That can be both good and bad. It’s definitely a golden opportunity for some players at Liverpool. Especially those who are on the fringes, who will now have another chance to prove themselves. Including one youngster who Alonso has already had on his radar.

Xabi Alonso tried to sign Luke Chambers

Luke Chambers spent the first half of the season playing for Liverpool. He featured for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Europa League and the League Cup. However, in January, it was clear Liverpool wanted to send him out on loan again.

Before then the Daily Mail reported that even Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen were interested in signing Chambers last summer. However, in the end Chambers moved on loan to League One side, Wigan in January instead.

It was a move which has paid dividends. Chambers has done brilliantly since arriving at Wigan and has started every game for the side. On his debut, he was so impressive that Shaun Maloney described it as ‘incredible.’

Chambers continues to grow game by game. This weekend Wigan may have lost, but he won the most tackles (4) and the most duels (7) on the pitch against Exeter.

A very versatile player, he has been used both as a left-back and as a left-sided centre-back since arriving at the club. The 19-year-old is making the exact same progress as Conor Bradley did last season. And if it is Alonso who succeeds Klopp, clearly that could bode well for Chambers – since the Spaniard already seems to be familiar with his game.
