There will be major changes at Liverpool next season. With a new manager at the helm, he will bring in a new philosophy and new players, too.

One of the favourites at the moment to succeed Jurgen Klopp is Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool manager has done really well since taking charge of Bayer Leverkusen. He’s still unbeaten this season and is currently top of the Bundesliga. Considering, where the club were when Alonso arrived – close to the relegation zone – this has been a remarkable turn-around. One which makes him the perfect candidate for Liverpool.

If it is Alonso who comes in, then one player the Spaniard could bring with him is Florian Wirtz. The German youngster is one of the best players in the Bundesliga. He’s been on Liverpool’s radar for some time. Even as recently as two months ago, the club was still being linked with him. In the past, he has also been described as a ‘generational’ talent [bundesliga.com].

Recently, he’s just matched Mohamed Salah this season as well for a key metric. Showing once again why he could tick so many boxes for Liverpool.

Florian Wirtz on par with Mohamed Salah this season

Impressively, Mohamed Salah created the most chances from open play in Europe’s top seven leagues this season. The Liverpool attacker has created a total of 46 chances from open play as per Squawka. However, he is joint in the metric by Wirtz himself, who has also created 46 chances, and Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski.

Out of the three players, it’s actually Wirtz, who has played the least minutes. So the fact that he is on par with Salah’s record is all the more impressive.

With 23 goal contributions in 28 games this season, Wirtz has proven once again that he is a special talent. He has been integral to Alonso’s success at Leverkusen. And if Alonso does end-up at Anfield, Wirtz would be the perfect addition for the Spaniard. And the perfect long-term successor to Salah’s throne.
