Out of all the players missing against Arsenal at the weekend, perhaps the one Liverpool missed the most was Dominik Szoboszlai. Ryan Gravenberch in his place struggled to provide the same energy and pressing that the Hungarian provides on a regular basis. And that allowed Arsenal to dominate the game and seize control, especially in transitions – when Liverpool were simply too slow to react.
There is no way to know the full extent of Szoboszlai’s injury just yet. All we know for now is that the Hungarian was not available for the game against Arsenal. But there has been no timescale set for when he can return to the pitch.
Liverpool hope that his layoff will not be as long as last time. Szoboszlai missed almost the whole of January due to injury, including key games in the League Cup semi-finals, FA Cup and the Premier League. The Reds simply need Szoboszlai’s energy to function properly in midfield. And a statistic which has just emerged has just shown exactly why that ithe case.

Dominik Szoboszlai the fastest midfielder
Last night Sky Sports released a graphic showcasing the fastest top speeds clocked in the Premier League this season. This graphic was shared by Twitter user @Jzrproductions_ on the social media site.
The graphic shows that Dominik Szoboszlai has clocked the fourth fastest speed in the Premier League this season at 36.76 km/h. Not only does that make him the fourth fastest in the league this season, but it also makes him the fastest central midfielder.
The fact that Szoboszlai was able to clock such top speed is really impressive. Normally, midfielders don’t make sprints as often. As a result, they are less likely to rank high in this metric. It’s a metric that is often dominated by forwards, wide players and centre-backs. In these positions, players on average make more sprints per game – therefore being more likely to clock a high top-speed.
But this just shows how unique Szoboszlai is. He is constantly making sprints in the middle of the park. And that’s been key in providing energy and helping Jurgen Klopp’s gegenpress functioning properly this season. As former Liverpool midfielder Istvan Kozma said recently, Szoboszlai is ‘unstoppable.’
