For the first time in five years, Liverpool chose not to make any signings in the January transfer window.
With the Reds going well in all four competitions, Jurgen Klopp clearly feels he has enough to manage until his exit in the summer. The lack of action didn’t stop transfer links from cropping up, though. Before and during the window, Liverpool were linked with a plethora of players.
One of those was young Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu. The 19-year-old has been an impressive breakout star for the Italian side this season. As a result, Liverpool were reported to be lining up a move to bring him to Anfield.
Other sides were linked too, mind you. Dorgu himself admitted that he’s always been a fan of Chelsea. In the end though, the Denmark U21 international stayed put. Good news for Lecce.
But according to the club’s technical director Pantaleo Corvino, that wasn’t a given. Speaking to Calciomercato, Corvino admitted that he had rejected ‘incredible’ offers for Dorgu in the month just gone.
“In January, I brought written offers to the president that I couldn’t refuse,” said the director. “I’ll add that I’ve had incredible unwritten requests. They were rejected.”
Lecce admit Dorgu interest
It seems a little unlikely that one of these offers would have been from Liverpool. Although interest might be there, there was no real reason for the Reds to actively try and sign Dorgu in January.
Of course, we all know that they were a little short at left-back over the winter. With Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas injured, Owen Beck had to be recalled from his loan at Dundee.
But with Joe Gomez filling in capably and Beck looking like a potential Premier League player, Jurgen Klopp was still reasonably well covered.
Big things are expected of Beck, who has stated his intention to make it to the Liverpool first-team in the future. As a result, there’s no need to bring in another young player in his position.

Robertson and Tsimikas are also now fit again, so Dorgu’s arrival would have felt excessive.
Still, it’s always worth keeping an eye on these things. The Lecce talent is obviously very highly rated and could soon find himself at one of Europe’s top clubs.
Liverpool will have to find a natural successor to Robertson over the next two or three years, and all options should be assessed.
Until Dorgu exit’s his current club, it’s worth keeping track of his movements.
