Away from Liverpool vs Arsenal this weekend, there was a former captain of the Reds making his debut for an illustrious club. Jordan Henderson finally debuted for Ajax in a big game against PSV.
The former Liverpool midfielder immediately went into the starting line-up and played the full ninety minutes in the match. A match that was even attended by Gareth Southgate, who was presumably in attendance to watch Henderson’s progress.
The game itself wasn’t the most exciting on paper. A 1-1 draw will not get most peoples’ hearts racing. However, Jordan Henderson still had nice words to say about one thing in particular, which stunned his interviewer.

Jordan Henderson on Ajax atmosphere
Speaking after the game, Jordan Henderson has special praise for the atmosphere at Ajax, which seemed to surprise his interviewer.
“But I thought the atmosphere here was amazing from the start to the finish. Really helped the lads I think to keep pushing and trying to find that winner,” Henderson said as per the BBC.
The interviewer followed up:
“Wait, you are used to Anfield, you are used to and then you say the first thing you say is ‘wow’ the atmosphere here.”
Henderson answered:
“Yeah it was incredible. I’ve heard the atmosphere’s really good. Especially against PSV and teams like this. But yeah, it was really good atmosphere, really special. It was a long time since I played in an atmosphere like that, so I really enjoyed that.”
Henderson’s comments are a little shocking considering Anfield was bouncing towards the end of last season. As Jurgen Klopp’s men went on the hunt to claw their way back to the top four – the atmosphere definitely returned. So it’s strange for Henderson to say that he hadn’t played in an atmosphere like that in a long time.
Even when things were not going quite right for Liverpool on the pitch, the Anfield atmosphere never really wavered. It’s one of the best grounds in world football. There is no doubt Ajax is special as well. But nothing can compare to Anfield. And for Henderson to even suggest that is bizarre.
