It’s fair to say that Liverpool and Jordan Henderson have had very different seasons so far.
While their former captain has grown disillusioned at playing in-front of tiny crowds in Saudi Arabia, the Reds have moved on emphatically without him.
With Henderson now on the verge of a move to Ajax and an escape from the Saudi Pro League, The Athletic have taken a look at his current standing at Liverpool.
They claim that despite the 33-year-old suggesting that he was forced out of Anfield, there is no ‘bad blood’ from the side of his former club.
On the contrary, it’s claimed that Henderson is still a ‘popular figure’ within the club. Having spent so long at Anfield, the England international is reportedly still in ‘close contact’ with both players and staff.
Should he ever wish to visit, it’s suggested that Henderson would be ‘welcomed back with open arms.’
Henderson still welcome at Liverpool
From Liverpool’s point of view, there’s really no reason that this shouldn’t be the case.
Although his departure was hasty and, ultimately, under thought, some would argue that Henderson had earned the right to go out on his terms anyway.
Unexpected as it was, their captain leaving forced Liverpool to complete the midfield rebuild they were clearly desperately in need of.
Since then, the Reds have looked re-energised. Had Henderson stuck around, perhaps that wouldn’t have been the case.
As a result, those associated with the club should arguably feel a gratitude that Hendo took matters into his own hands last summer.

Nevertheless, a stink does still remain. It’s quite obvious that Henderson himself knows that too. While the likes of Roberto Firmino and Fabinho have been back at Anfield already this season, the former captain has steered clear.
Given the reception he’s received while playing for England this campaign, maybe Henderson is slightly worried about how he’ll be greeted.
In truth though, the veteran should only ever be welcomed at Anfield. He won the lot as a real leader of the club and gave it his all right up until the end. The way he left could have been handled far better, but that’s football sometimes. Hopefully we’ll now see Hendo back at his club in some capacity very soon.
