National team manager suggests 23-year-old Liverpool star should be playing at a better club

Liverpool are still reeling from the news that Jurgen Klopp will no longer be their manager from the 2024/25 season.

Over the course of his reign at Anfield, Klopp has turned Liverpool back into one of the best teams in Europe. The club was a shadow of its former self when he arrived in 2015, but almost nine years on, it is once again a behemoth of the continent.

Nevertheless, the Reds clearly don’t impress everyone. Speaking to Nb1hu after Dominik Szoboszlai was crowned as his country’s player of the year for 2023, Hungary boss Marco Rossi suggested that Liverpool’s No.8 could still reach an even higher level.

“We have top players, but Dominik is the headliner and he can develop even more in the future,” explained the Italian coach. “I don’t know if we can call Liverpool the top of the top in the panorama of European football, but Dominik can become a real top footballer in the next few years. Why not?

“It also depends on how many titles he can collect with his club and what he can achieve with the Hungarian national team. But it also depends on himself. If he can continue to be as committed as he is now – and as he has been in the past, of course – then he can reach this (highest) level in the future. Dominik is a footballer who can only get better every year.”

Rossi tips Szoboszlai for greater things.

We don’t mean to sound rude, but who on earth is Mr Marco Rossi to say such things. The man had an undistinguished playing career, with Eintracht Frankfurt perhaps the biggest name on his CV.

In management, Rossi has taken over at such giants as Scafetese and DAC Dunajska Streda. Nope, us neither.

So, with all due respect, he should refrain from making such unnecessary comments about Liverpool.

The Hungary boss’ statement comes hot on the heels of Szoboslzai’s agent speaking out about Klopp’s impending exit from Anfield. Put together, you get the impression that the 23-year-old could perhaps look to leave at some stage.

Not yet, it must be said. He does seem happy and that comes through in the quotes from his agent. But with the likes of Rossi egging him on, you just get the feeling that trouble could be brewing further down the line.

None of that is Szoboszlai’s fault, of course. The former RB Leipzig man has been a good signing for Liverpool so far and is not responsible for the words of those close to him.

What we would say to Mr Rossi in particular though, is that while he’s done well for the large part, Szoboszlai should focus on being a success at Liverpool before anything else.

His form has been patchy over the past few months. After a blistering start to the season, we’ve seen a little dip off from the midfielder of late.

Once he gets real consistency in his game, then maybe he can talk about joining ‘the top of the top’, whatever that means. We don’t think Szoboszlai will get better than Liverpool mind you, and if he hasn’t realised that already, he soon will.
