Former Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has admitted that he’s watched plenty of his old team this season.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is experiencing something brand new in 2023/24. Having spent his whole career in England – and the past six years with Liverpool – the 30-year-old is now playing with Besiktas in Turkey.
But despite now playing abroad, Ox is still managing to watch plenty of Premier League action. Speaking to Sky Sports this week, the former Reds star was asked if there are any players currently catching his eye in England’s top division.
“I mean, obviously, I watch a lot of Liverpool games,” Oxlade-Chamberlain admitted. “The usuals: Mo Salah still scoring those goals. I’ve really enjoyed watching Dominik Szoboszlai. He’s sort of taken over from my sort of role and I’m really impressed with how good of a player he is and that he plays the game, how I sort of always want to play the game.
“I think he’s got so much ability, physicality and just his character as a player. I think he’s just what we needed in there. He’s been really, really good. Trent tells me a lot how good he is as well. Trent says his shots are better than mine. He’s got everything.
“I know what the other guys that I’ve played with are capable of so it was more interesting to see the new lads come in, what they can do. I’ve enjoyed watching him.”
Ox gives Szoboszlai approval
It’s nice to hear Ox speaking so well about the current crop of Liverpool players.
Having recently voiced some disappointment over the way he left the club, the former England international may have reason to be a little bitter.
But the Besiktas man was never that way inclined. A jovial and supportive figure, there’s a reason Jurgen Klopp kept him around as long as he did, despite an eventually limited playing role.
On the pitch, Oxlade-Chamberlain has also been sending a reminder of what he can do. If you haven’t seen it yet, go and check out his solo goal against Ankaragucu on Sunday. Delightful.

Although a reminder of the obvious quality he possesses though, it’s clear that Liverpool have got themselves an upgrade in Szoboszlai.
Ox is right, the Hungarian does somewhat resemble the style of play that he himself could never quite implement for the Reds.
All-action, combative and capable of scoring from distance, Szoboszlai is very much an Oxlade-Chamberlain 2.0. If the 23-year-old can go on and win what his predecessor did at Anfield, he’ll have done very well indeed.
Of course it’s still very early days in that regard, but the first signs have been good ones. Szoboszlai has impressed just about everybody with the way he’s stepped into this Liverpool team. He’s had a quiet few weeks, it must be said, but he’ll be back. And by the sounds of it, Ox will be watching.
