18-year-old Liverpool prospect has been promoted, he’s seen as ‘important’ in the first-team

As expected, Liverpool were quiet in the transfer market during Thursday’s deadline day.

For the first time in five years, the Reds chose not to bring any new additions in mid-season. There was a departure yesterday, as centre-back Billy Koumetio headed off on-loan to Blackburn Rovers. But that was it.

There had perhaps been expected to be another young player leaving too, with Bobby Clark attracting interest.

However, as per journalist James Pearce on X yesterday evening, Clark was actively blocked from making a move. Liverpool now reportedly see him as an ‘important’ first-team member.

“Bobby Clark going nowhere today,” Pearce reports. “Young midfielder now regarded as important part of Liverpool’s first-team staff. Made four senior appearances in January. Lots of loan interest but not available.”

This is a similar scenario that befell Clark in the summer. Back then, the 18-year-old had looked likely to depart for Derby County on deadline day.

However, Jurgen Klopp stepped in, with Clark needed to provide cover for the senior side.

As it happened, the former Newcastle United prospect wasn’t able to play until January. Injury kept him from featuring sooner than that, as Clark suffered a frustrating start to the season.

But since an excellent cameo against Arsenal at the start of last month, Bobby has shown why Liverpool are keen to keep him.

It has so far only been glimpses. His four appearances amount to 35 minutes on the pitch. But you can see why Klopp likes him so much.

Technically excellent and seemingly a little bit of a scrapper too, Clark could yet forge a pathway for himself at Liverpool.

With Thiago Alcantara now back in training though, it does feel a little like there’s a few too many midfield options. Perhaps the youngster would have been better off heading out and getting minutes.

Once Thiago returns – and hopefully Stefan Bajcetic and some point – Clark will be way down the pecking order.

Nevertheless, it’s obviously a positive thing that Klopp thinks he has another young talent who can play a part. It’s set to be a busy end to the season for Liverpool and Clark will learn plenty from being around that, too.
