Chris Sutton says £8m Liverpool defender could be about to leave with Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp may not be the only significant name leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

Klopp stunned the world of football last week by announcing his decision to depart Anfield once the final whistle blows on the 2023/24 campaign.

The news from the manager was followed up yesterday by some slightly concerning comments from captain Virgil van Dijk. And now, according to BBC Monday Night Football pundit Chris Sutton, two more Reds player might be considering their futures.

“They have such a close-knit group, Klopp has been there years,” Sutton began. “The players he signed will feel they owe him one. They’ll want to be galvanised and win everything.

“But then because they’ve been part of the journey under Klopp it may feel for some like Van Dijk that they may want to move on. Van Dijk, Andy Robertson, [Mohamed] Salah look like they might move on. It is possibly the end of an era, not just for Klopp but for some of the players.

“A lot of players Klopp brought in will feel that bond with him and may think ‘we can’t argue it’s the right time to leave when Jurgen Klopp does, a natural time’.”

Sutton backs Robertson exit

For Liverpool fans, they’ll now be bracing themselves for some major upheaval this summer.

Plenty would already have been expecting the potential exit of Salah. But Van Dijk’s words yesterday will have now raised real concerns that we could be facing an overhaul.

With the Dutchman’s contract up in 2025, perhaps that shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise, though.

What really would be a shock would be Robertson also calling time on his Anfield career.

The 29-year-old has indeed been deeply linked to the Klopp era at Liverpool. But that alone is surely no reason to leave.

Having finally made his return from more than three months out injured this weekend, Robertson must have the bit between his teeth to make up for lost time this season.

Being the kind of determined character that he is, it would be a real surprise if the Scotland captain were thinking of calling it a day at Liverpool after a season of disruption. His contract runs a year longer than Van Dijk’s until 2026.

Nevertheless, Klopp’s bombshell is further evidence that nothing lasts forever in football.

Having been signed for around £8m in 2017 and since won it all with the Reds, Robertson has been one heck of a player for Liverpool. Nobody would begrudge him if he’s decided time is now up. But we’d be really surprised. He’s not finished yet.
