Jurgen Klopp’s announcement came out of the blue on Friday night. Not just for the majority of the footballing world. But for his players as well.

Andy Robertson has already admitted he was shocked by Klopp’s announcement. Undoubtedly, others will have felt the same when Klopp revealed his decision.

Klopp has been a father figure to many of the club’s players. Most of whom owe him a great debt of gratitude for what he has done in their career. He’s also been such a pillar at Liverpool for the last nine years. It’s difficult to imagine life without him.

Those first moments must have been emotionally charged when Klopp announced his decision. And Virgil van Dijk has now been speaking about what happened in training afterwards.

Virgil van Dijk on Jurgen Klopp’s departure

Speaking as per the Liverpool ECHO, Van Dijk revealed people took Klopp’s news differently. However, he also admitted nothing has really changed in training. Life has gone on as normal.

“I don’t think it could be an insult to your professionalism (to let Klopp’s news affect you), we are all human beings and we have emotions – some players feel different about the manager’s announcement than others: that’s absolutely normal because everyone thinks in different ways but I didn’t notice the professionalism being dropped or the level of standard.

“The training sessions I have seen in the last couple of days were not different than before and I think today as well, for the boss it was a bit different, but for us it was to make sure we got to the next round with some players coming back from injury and now we focus on Wednesday (against Chelsea).”

It speaks volumes of the professionalism at Liverpool how the Reds have all gotten on with their business. Not just in training but on the pitch as well. There were no signs of anything different against Norwich City at the weekend – just the usual big victory at Anfield for Klopp’s side.

This is what must now continue heading into an exciting last few months left of the season. There is still so much at stake and so much to fight for. Klopp deserves a memorable send-off, and the best way to do that is to create yet more special memories on the pitch.
