Liverpool are continuing to assess the potential successors to Jurgen Klopp.

This isn’t a position any Liverpool supporter will have expected their club to be in just 36 hours ago. Nevertheless, after Klopp’s surprise announcement yesterday, they’ll need a new manager for next season.

There have already been a clutch of names linked. Xabi Alonso looks like the current favourite, with Roberto De Zerbi not far behind.

A couple of further suggestions have also been put forward from the Premier League – Ange Postecoglou of Tottenham and Brentford’s Thomas Frank.

And according to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, Sporting manager Ruben Amorim is another ‘on Liverpool’s list.’

They claim that the 39-year-old has a release clause of around £17m, which would need to be paid to Sporting. Amorim’s reputation as a nurturer of young talents as well as his attractive style of football are suggested to have brought him to the Reds’ attention.

Liverpool add Amorim to shortlist

As Liverpool begin the impossible task of finding Klopp’s replacement, Amorim is an interesting name to consider.

At 39, he’s still incredibly young for a manager. However, the former Portugal international player will have already been at Sporting for four years in March.

Furthermore, the Lisbon giants are his second job at the top level in his homeland. Amorim also managed Braga for almost a full season in 2019/20.

In 2020/21 he guided Sporting to their first league title for 19 years. He’s clearly got something a bit special.

As a tactician, Amorim is one of the most revered around and has also overseen the development of a couple of players who Liverpool would seemingly love to buy.

So, all of this paints the picture of a man who could be ready for the step up to Anfield.

Obviously, the inclusion of a release clause may be something that puts off the miserly FSG. However, £17m doesn’t seem like such a price to pay for a top young coaching talent.

Alonso would still be many people’s preferred choice. But Amorim is certainly worth a look.
