Suggestions for Liverpool’s next manager have already been pouring in following today’s announcement from Jurgen Klopp.

In some truly shocking news, the Liverpool boss this morning confirmed that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Tributes have already started, while Reds supporters cast their collective eyes towards what comes next.

And according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, their next manager may already be in the Premier League. Writing in The Telegraph today, Carragher put forward the name of Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi for FSG’s consideration.

“Brighton and Hove Albion’s Roberto de Zerbi must also be on FSG’s radar,” writes the 45-year-old.

“What unites the two outstanding candidates is the similarity to Klopp at Borussia Dortmund – namely using the resources at their disposal to punch above their weight playing a thrilling brand of football.”

Carragher suggests De Zerbi hire

A glance around the state of European football right now would suggest that Liverpool will have to be very careful with this decision.

Obviously, whoever they choose to bring in will not be able to hold a candle to Klopp. The only manager who could really do that right now is Pep Guardiola, and he certainly won’t be joining.

So, whoever it ends up being, it’ll be a big step down for the Reds.

Because of that, we think it makes the most sense to try and get a relatively young, up and coming manager who is truly yet to peak.

De Zerbi would fit the bill in that respect and could go on to mould his own legacy at Anfield.

Although Klopp has outright said that he will play no part in the hiring of his successor, the German has previously spoken well of the Brighton boss, too.

In truth though, we’re not completely convinced that De Zerbi quite has what it takes just now. Brighton have been good under the Italian, but have dipped off a little this season.

The 44-year-old is surely set to be a name we’ll hear plenty of between now and May. But we’re going to need just a touch more convincing.
