More than 24 hours on, and things are still yet to truly hit home for Liverpool supporters.
By now, some will have accepted that from May onwards, Jurgen Klopp will no longer be their manager. For others, a process of denial will still be ongoing.
Regardless of how supporters are feeling though, the reality is that Liverpool need to find a man to replace the irreplaceable. As The Athletic detail today, the search for the Reds’ next manager is actively on.
As expected, they suggest that former midfielder Xabi Alonso is regarded as the ‘frontrunner’ so far.
But of course Alonso isn’t the only candidate under consideration. Roberto De Zerbi’s is a name that was already put forward by Jamie Carragher yesterday, and the Italian is said to be ‘on the radar.’
So too is Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou, a boyhood Liverpool supporter. Finally, Brentford’s Thomas Frank is also reportedly ‘admired’ thanks to his team’s stylistically similar approach to Klopp’s. Interesting times ahead.
Liverpool begin manager search
Looking through this list of four candidates, all of them would surely bring something to Liverpool.
Alonso is understandably many people’s choice. The Spaniard looks to have the makings of an elite level manager and has obvious connections to the club.
His time as a player at Anfield ended prematurely and there’s certainly a case of unfinished business for Alonso.
De Zerbi can be seen as a similarly exciting coach to Xabi, but has the benefit of many more years experience than the Bayer Leverkusen boss. Having worked in three different countries and taken charge of seven teams, De Zerbi has a good body of work behind him.

So too does Postecoglou, who’s humanistic approach somewhat mirrors that of Klopp.
Perhaps the curveball here then is Frank. Coming from the lowest down the football pyramid, there would likely be a little bit of a negative rection towards the Dane taking charge of Liverpool.
But, to be honest, we’d be fans of it. Frank has proven himself time and again in the Premier League and personality wise, he’s relatively similar to Jurgen. If given greater resources and budget at Liverpool, perhaps he has the capacity to surprise a few.
Nevertheless, as it would be for all of this quartet, the jump to Liverpool would be a big one. There’s just no replacing Jurgen. Somehow though, the Reds are going to have to try.
