£70m player says he wants to play in England, after claims Liverpool have spoken to him

Liverpool are currently looking unlikely to bring in any major signings before the end of the January transfer window.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t full steam ahead for next summer. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported today that the Reds are putting in calls to a number of agents of potential defensive additions.

And although centre-back still remains a priority for Liverpool, they’ve also been linked with plenty of players from the other end of the field.

One of those is Victor Osimhen. The Napoli striker has recently signed a new contract to stay in Naples, but it still feels likely that he’ll be on the move before long. Back in October for example, it was claimed that Liverpool had already made ‘several direct contacts to sign the 25-year-old. Nothing has since come of that.

Nevertheless, Osimhen’s comments to Sky Sports Premier League this morning should still be interesting for Reds fans to hear. Asked if he could see himself one days playing in the Premier League, the Nigerian pulled no punches.

“Of course one day, definitely,” Osimhen replied. “For now I have other plans in my career that I’m looking forward to. So when the time comes, everyone knows.”

If you ask Liverpool fans what their biggest need in the transfer market would be at the moment, nearly all would say a defender.

The Reds are down to the bare bones at centre-back, left-back and right-back just now. They need some reinforcement.

Some would possibly still bang the drum about a defensive midfielder, too. Despite Wataru Endo’s noticeably improvement of late, Liverpool may still need a long-term solution to their No.6 position.

Beyond those two things the Reds are, on paper, more or less sorted. But still, it can’t be ignored that some of their forwards have a problem sticking the ball in the net.

Darwin Nunez’s struggles in-front of goal are well known, but Luis Diaz and even Cody Gakpo have been a little lean at times this season as well.

As a result, Liverpool are just as reliant as ever on the goals of Mohamed Salah. In times where the Egyptian is away – like this very instant – they feel a touch lightweight in attack.

They shouldn’t, there is firepower there. But still, you can’t shake the feeling that someone like Osimhen would score a lot of goals in this team. The former Lille man hasn’t been especially prolific this season for Napoli but eight goals in 18 games is still a decent strike-rate.

Yes, Osimhen would probably even cost north of the £70m or so Napoli paid for him in 2020. But he’s clearly keen to move to England and perhaps he could help take Liverpool to another level. In truth, we can’t see this happening, but that hasn’t stopped the links from coming.
