‘I was just told’… Fabrizio Romano shares transfer update he’s just been given about Liverpool

Liverpool are active in the transfer market as they look to make a centre-back signing.

The Reds have been linked with plenty of defenders so far this month. The latest, Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande, is even claimed to have the potential to be a £100m+ player in the near future.

So far though, none of that has translated into an actual signing. And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, it may not do.

Writing in the Daily Briefing this morning, Romano reports that Liverpool are not ‘urgent’ in their search for a new centre-back. However, he does also relay that Liverpool are ringing around in order to find the perfect player.

“As mentioned yesterday, Liverpool are exploring the market for potential new signings at centre-back,” says the transfer expert. “Though it’s not something urgent or guaranteed to happen this January, as we know Liverpool generally prefer to do their business in the summer.

“I don’t have any concrete name yet at this stage, but I was just told that Liverpool have made some calls to some centre-backs’ agents to be informed on situations – it hasn’t become a concrete negotiation as of now. It’s not easy to find top players in the January window, that’s the problem.”

Liverpool making calls

By now, it’s quite evident that Liverpool will be needing a new defender or two over the coming months.

As a result, it would be strange if the Reds weren’t doing their due diligence on a number of potential signings. These things don’t happen over night.

From what we already know of Liverpool’s transfer business, they generally like to be as thorough as possible when bringing in a new player.

They have of course done some knee-jerk bits of business. But with the panic signings of the likes of Arthur Melo and Ozan Kabak really failing to pay off, the Reds are more suited to a more patient approach.

If any of the agent’s they’re calling turns around and says their player is available and ready to move right now, and the price is right, maybe Liverpool will still do something.

But as Romano says, the right player can be hard to find mid-season. The Reds usually have a very specific idea of the kind of signing they’d like to make and won’t just move for the sake of it.

It would be interesting to know just who is on the other end of the line to Jorg Schmadtke at the moment, but if you’ve been following the transfer links of recent months, you can probably read between the lines.

We wouldn’t be getting set for anything to happen over the next two weeks, though. But in terms of the summer window, it sounds like it’s already full steam ahead for Liverpool.
