Jurgen Klopp has been asking 31-year-old Liverpool player for advice over transfers

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been turning to his playing staff for advice on transfers.

For years, Liverpool’s king of the transfer market was undisputed. Michael Edwards earned his reputation as one of the shrewdest operators in the game, he didn’t need any help.

But since Edwards’ departure, things have become a little more blurred. Julian Ward initially took over from his old boss, but he too was out the door a year later. Following Ward’s departure, in came Jorg Schmadtke from the Bundesliga.

Schmadtke has done a good job so far and is even reportedly open to staying a little longer than anticipated. But the 59-year-old isn’t the main man at Liverpool, he appears to be more of a facilitator.

As a result, the Liverpool ECHO claim that Klopp has taken on a greater role in recruitment. With the German famously someone who seeks the council of those around him though, Klopp has reportedly been looking elsewhere for help.

Surprisingly, some of that is said to have come from goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The 31-year-old is claimed to be widely regarded as the best ‘keeper in the world at the AXA Training Centre. Consequently, it’s claimed that Klopp and other recruitment staff have sought Alisson’s advice when targeting new goalkeepers.

Alisson’s advice so far appears to have been for the undertaking of signings for the academy. That is unless they brought some suggestions to the Brazilian and he rejected them.

Liverpool haven’t brought in a senior goalie for the first-team since Adrian back in 2019.

Andy Lonergan arrived at the same time, but the 40-year-old was initially brought in only one trial, before signing on for a year.

Since then, a number of young ‘keepers have joined, but none for the senior squad.

That could soon change, mind you. With rumours of an exit having circulated for a year or so now, it would appear likely that Caoimhin Kelleher will leave in 2024.

The Reds have reportedly slapped a £20m price-tag on Kelleher, who’s said to be attracting interest from Celtic, among other clubs.

If the Irishman does leave, Liverpool are going to have to replace him. As a result, it’ll be interesting to see who gets Alisson’s stamp of approval.

The Brazilian has often praised Kelleher and will no doubt be disappointed to see his understudy leave. But should he go, a new man will come in – likely with Alisson’s blessing – to challenge him for the No.1 spot.
