Report: Liverpool now face major reshuffle with key figure now set to leave the club

Julian Ward is set to leave his position as Liverpool’s sporting director at the end of the season, according to journalist Paul Joyce.

After just one year in the role, the former Michael Edwards depute has decided to depart Anfield.

As per The Times’ report, Ward’s decision is unexpected and adds to the unprecedented changes ongoing at the club.

The sporting director has informed Fenway Sports Group that he wants to take a break from football.

Whilst the club are disappointed, they do not believe he is leaving to take up another job elsewhere.

Ward set to leave role as sporting director

Ward’s departure follows Edwards’ exit, which only came in May.

His predecessor also cited wanting a break away from football, and has since rejected a number of job offers, including major interest from Chelsea.

Having been handed the reigns by Edwards, Ward was thought to be a strong replacement for the role, having shadowed the former director for many years.

Over the summer, the 41-year-old pulled off an incredible swoop in Darwin Nunez, welcoming the Uruguay international to Anfield in a club-record deal worth £85m.

Furthermore, he helped sign youngsters Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay, who are seen as prospects for the future.

Possibly the most importantly he did during his tenure, he tied Mohamed Salah down to a new long-term deal.

With FSG’s decision to put the club up for sale, it was always going to cause unrest on Merseyside.

It appears Ward is the first victim of such uncertainty, and his exit could possibly trigger more behind-the-scenes staff to do the same thing.

With the January transfer window just around the corner, the club will need to act fast to bring in his replacement, as additions as imperative for Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
