What is now likely to happen with Jorg Schmadtke’s future at Liverpool

Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke is still unsure over his future at Anfield.

Schmadtke was surprisingly brought in over the summer as a short-term fix to Liverpool’s lack of a recognised sporting director. However, now into the second transfer window of the 2023/24 season and the German is still in situ at Anfield.

Despite reports linking Liverpool with sporting directors such as Max Eberl, nothing concrete has emerged on that front. And now, reporting for the Daily Briefing, journalist Christian Falk says things are still up in the air for Schmadtke at Liverpool.

“Jorg Schmadtke and the club had an agreement that they would talk at the end of February and the beginning of March over his future,” Falk reports.

“Schmadtke is not sure what he will decide then. He’ll hear what Liverpool wants and, because he likes the club very much and is enjoying his role there, I suspect he’ll think about extending his stay if they tell him they need him longer.

“At the moment, it’s really open and his contract is ending in June, so he’s not currently set to help the club with their summer window dealings. With that in mind, it’s important they talk early, as they can’t start talks on July 1st ahead of the new season.”

Schmadtke open to Liverpool stay

In all honesty, we wouldn’t mind Schmadtke staying on at Liverpool. In the end, his dealings for the summer were relatively straightforward, but as of right now, they all look like being successes.

Wataru Endo was the big one in that regard. Alexis Mac Allister’s transfer was apparently sorted by his predecessor, Julian Ward, and was simply the triggering of a release clause anyway.

So too was the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai which, although a coup, was a formality once the Hungarian heard of Liverpool’s interest.

For Endo, things were completely different. Of course, the deal wasn’t a hugely big one and was comfortable for Liverpool to negotiate. But more than that, the 30-year-old was not someone who would have been previously identified.

That he was and was subsequently signed is surely Schmadtke’s doing. For that reason, we have to tip our hat to him. Despite some initial misgivings, Endo has proven to be an extremely shrewd addition so far.

Ryan Gravenberch also has to be considered a good signing, too. The Dutchman has gone off the boil a bit recently but still only 21, he could yet turn out to be an absolute steal from Bayern Munich.

January doesn’t seem as though we’ll get the chance to see any more of Jorg’s talents at work. Almost halfway through the month now, it’s looking like being extremely quiet.

So, if we’re judging off of past record, then Schmadtke certainly deserves another window. If the right alternative isn’t available, then he’s already proven to be a safe pair of hands. Let’s see what he and the club eventually decide.
